‘Francis Alÿs: Ricochets’ transformed the Barbican Art Gallery into a cinematic playground, celebrating the universality and ingenuity of play. The exhibition focussed on the artists on-going film series ‘Children’s Games’: from ‘leapfrog’ in Iraq, ‘jump rope’ in Hong Kong and ‘Wolf and Lamb’ in Afghanistan. His small paintings and new animations featured alongside the multi-screen presentation. We designed the accompanying gallery guide, with texts (by Lorna Scott Fox) and illustrated icons (from Alÿs himself) on each featured game, a sign-painted entrance graphic and banister display showcasing global stories of play from throughout history.
